October 18, 2007 Dinner Meeting – “IP Practice in Today’s Asia”

The SVIPLA Board of Directors is pleased to offer a convenient online registration service through Thriva (Active Network) for monthly dinner meeting registrations AND renewal/new membership dues payments. Advance dinner registrations will be accepted ONLY through the online registration service; please do not register through the SVIPLA email address.

The Board would like to thank all those who registered online for the September meeting (over 60 in attendance) with only a couple of hiccups. Bear with us as we work out the bugs in this new system for SVIPLA.

1. Dinner meeting registration payments and membership dues payments will only be accepted through the online registration service.

2. It’s a super easy, fast and convenient way to pay by using your VISA, Mastercard or online electronic bank check.

3. You will receive an immediate online confirmation, which you can use as a receipt for reimbursement from your company.

4. Dinner registration cancellation – to receive a refund, you will be required to cancel ONLINE by the set deadline (see below).

Program: “IP Practice in Today’s Asia”

Speaker: Chris Chou, Partner, K&L Gates, San Francisco, will discuss patent prosecution in Asia for U.S.-based clients, representing Asia-based clients in patent infringement actions, and representing clients against Asia-based parties in patent infringement actions.

Mr. Chou practices in the area of intellectual property litigation. As a former Director of Intellectual Property, Legal for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd., he had overall management of intellectual property matters including inter alia, patents and trade secrets. He concentrates on patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret counseling, and has experience in preparation of patent applications, patent portfolio management, patent prosecution, and patent infringement/validity analysis in the areas of electronics, microprocessor, computer software, computer system/architecture and semiconductor devices/fabrication technologies. He has managed patent dispute matters in Taiwan and the U.S., and has negotiated various deals including joint development projects, patent and technology license agreements, and patent acquisition transactions. Prior to that, Mr. Chou practiced with several law firms in California in the areas of intellectual property and patent litigation. In addition, he has over 13 years’ industrial experience as an engineer and manager in the area of electronics, robotics systems, and computer hardware and software design.

The venue may not be able to serve meals beyond the guaranteed number expected for the meeting.

FREE SEMINAR ON USING THE ELECTRONIC FILING SYSTEM (EFS) FOR U.S. PATENTS – OCTOBER 18

Patent Program Manager Bill Stryjewski from the USPTO will conduct two free Electronic Filing System (EFS) – Web and e-Commerce events on October 18 at the Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave. The first session, for intellectual property attorneys, begins at 1 p.m. The second session for paralegals, patent agents and patent administrators, begins at 3 p.m.

Hosted by SVIPLA and the Sunnyvale Patent and Trademark Depository Library, this event is separated into two live training and briefing sessions in order to provide a focused presentation and more audience participation.

During the first session, from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., attorneys will be briefed on the latest developments in the USPTO’s e-Commerce initiatives, including EFS-Web, PAIR 7.0, Outgoing Correspondence and PDX. Training on the use of EFS-Web, a discussion of common filing mistakes, and time for questions and answers will be provided. During the second session, from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., paralegals, patent agents and patent administrators will receive extensive live training on the use of EFS-Web, which will include creating PDF files, a discussion of system nuances, common filing mistakes, document descriptions, support, and time for questions and answers.
