PRESIDENT\'S MESSAGE

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at the Sheraton Hotel in Palo Alto. The speaker is Associate Professor David Franklyn of the USF School of Law, whose topic is \"Beyond Dilution: Toward a Coherent Theory of Anti-Free Rider Protection for Famous Trademarks.\"

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this is the time of year to pay your membership dues. SVIPLA\'s membership year extends from September through June, and dues are due at the beginning of the term. For your convenience, the $55 dues will be accepted at the October meeting. Beginning with the November meeting, the cost of the dinner will be assessed according to member or non-member rate.

SPEAKER: David Franklyn, Associate Professor, USF School of Law

TOPIC: \"BEYOND DILUTION: TOWARD A COHERENT THEORY OF ANTI-FREE RIDER PROTECTION FOR FAMOUS TRADEMARKS\".

David Franklyn is a Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of San Francisco. He also serves as the Director of the McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology Law and the IP LLM Program at USF Law School. Professor Franklyn is co-author and Editor-in-Chief of the third edition of McCarthy’s Desk Encyclopedia of Intellectual Property and has authored several articles on trademark law. Prior to joining the faculty at USF, Professor Franklyn taught intellectual property law at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Professor Franklyn earned his JD from the University of Michigan Law School, clerked for U.S. Judge John Feikens in Detroit, and practiced law for five years at Mayer, Brown, Rowe and Maw in Chicago, before entering academia.
