“Alternative Dispute Resolution and IP Litigation”

Location: Hyatt Regency, Santa Clara (Great America Parkway one block north of Tasman)

Speaker: Hon. Read Ambler (Ret.), JAMS

Hon. Read Ambler (Ret.), our February speaker, was CCP Section 638 discovery referee in the Santa Clara Superior Court case Synopsys v. Nassda, which generated over 230 discovery motions in its litigation lifetime, resulting in severe sanctions for spoliation of electronic evidence. He has also arbitrated several high-stakes IP matters using \'baseball\' and \'night baseball\' protocols, and has mediated numerous IP cases to settlement. He will discuss these and other IP ADR experiences during his almost seven years at JAMS.

Judge Ambler has successfully resolved hundreds of cases as a full-time JAMS neutral since March 2000 serving as a mediator, arbitrator, private judge, discovery referee, or special master. He has extensive experience in resolving intellectual property, business and commercial, real property, employment, family and probate cases. Judge Ambler is recognized by San Jose Magazine as one of the top mediators in Silicon Valley. He is a member of the JAMS Board of Directors and serves on the JAMS National Arbitration Committee. As Presiding Judge of the Santa Clara Superior Court, Judge Ambler managed both the civil and criminal trial calendars and served as sole Civil Master Settlement Conference Judge. As Civil Division Supervising Judge, he handled settlement, case management, and civil law and motion in thousands of cases, including intellectual property and other trade secret, employment, discrimination, commercial, medical and legal malpractice, personal injury, fraud, and other disputes. He had extensive jury and court trial experience as an attorney before his appointment to the bench.
