INVENTOR OF THE YEAR RECIPIENT: PATRICK S. L. WONG, Ph.D., Vice President, Advanced Drug Delivery, ALZA Corporation

Dr. Wong has been leading ALZA’s OROS® technology for several years — the OROS® drug delivery systems use the principle of osmosis to make oral drug administration more precise, reliable and convenient. This technology is the basis for some of the most successful products developed by ALZA, including Procardia XL® (nifedipine), the best selling cardiovascular product in the United States during the eighties.

Since joining ALZA in 1973, Dr. Wong has directed research and product development for a variety of controlled-release drug delivery technologies. His endeavors have led to the introduction of the Progestasert® intrauterine progesterone contraceptive system and the development of numerous oral drug delivery systems, including OROS® systems, and a variety of other oral controlled delivery systems addressing problems of drug absorption, cost effectiveness and convenient ways of drug taking, most recent product examples are Ditropan XL® and Concerta®. Dr. Wong holds more than 190 United States Patents covering these systems and has published 32 articles. He was also the inventor of Ring Cap® and Dose Sipping Technology (DST®) which were both franchised to other companies.

In 1996, Dr. Wong received ALZA’s Founder’s Award in recognition for his contributions to the company. The Founder’s Award is the company’s highest honor bestowed upon an employee. Prior to joining ALZA, Dr. Wong headed the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Wong received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering Practice from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry from the Imperial College of Science and Technology at the University of London.

Last year’s Inventor of the Year recipient was Radia Perlman, Distinguished Engineer, Sun Microsystems Laboratories; who holds 70 patents, and was named as one of the 20 most influential people in information technology by Data Communications Magazine in its 20th and 25th anniversary editions
