Victoria Brewster, Ph.D., J.D., received her doctorate in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of California, San Diego in 1987. She credits serendipity for introducing her to Patent Law when she was working as a post-doc at Tulane University in New Orleans. She returned to school to receive her J.D. from Boston University in 1996. After law school she worked at several law firms, one of which was Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe where she met her co-speaker. She currently works as Patent Counsel at Genencor Intl., a biotechnology company in Palo Alto.
Herwig von Morze, Ph.D., Organic Chemistry started his patent practice in 1968 in Austria and Germany. In 1974 he was recruited as international patent specialist by Syntex Corporation in California. Beginning in 1980, he directed Syntex\'s international patent procurement and enforcement program. In the early nineties, with Syntex\'s management\'s approval he started as patent consultant to a major law firm in matters where there no conflict with Syntex existed. After F.Hoffmann La Roche acquired Syntex in 1995, he joined Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe, and in 2004 he started his own patent consulting practice. Herwig\'s specialties are European patent prosecution, appeals, oppositions, enforcement, and international patent term extension proceedings. He assists emerging companies with their patent portfolios and their patent and regulatory strategies. He is a widely published author and has given presentations in the US and internationally.
TOPIC: “EUROPEAN PATENT PROSECUTION & OPPOSITION PROCEEDINGS”
Mr. von Morze’s presentation will focus on selected European patent prosecution topics, highlight differences between European and US patent prosecution, and provide tips on how to put US applicants in the best position before the EPO. Ms. Brewster’s presentation will discuss European opposition proceedings based on her substantial practical EPO opposition experience. She will share with you the many valuable lessons learned while preparing for and attending opposition proceedings. This should be of particular interest because the United States is currently exploring the possibility of providing for post-grant opposition proceedings.

NOMINATIONS EXTENDED FOR INVENTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
It’s that time again – we are seeking your submission for the 2005 SVIPLA Inventor of the Year.
Deadline for submission is Friday, May 6.
The SVIPLA Board of Directors will judge the nominees based on their contributions to the technical arts, and then celebrate the achievements of the winner by naming him or her \"Inventor of the Year.\" The award presentation will take place during our June meeting.
You may submit your nominations by replying to: svipla@yahoo.com. Please provide the nominee\'s name, place of employment (if applicable), and a brief description of the nominee\'s work. It would also be helpful if you could attach a copy of one or more of the nominee\'s patents via a web link or a PDF file. If necessary, additional information may be requested.
The 2004 Inventor of the Year was Radia Perlman, Distinguished Engineer, Sun Microsystems Laboratories. At Sun, Radia conducts research on network security and routing technologies. She holds 70 patents with others pending, has published in numerous publications and was named as one of the 20 most influential people in information technology by Data Communications Magazine in its 20th and 25th anniversary editions.

The SVIPLA Board of Directors is seeking nominations for Program Chair for the September 2005-June 2006 meeting year.

Job Description - Program Chair: Plan the program topics for the 2005-2006 meeting year (September through May - the June meeting each year is devoted to the Inventor of the Year Award); solicit and obtain speakers for the meetings; work with the SVIPLA administrator to coordinate requests by the confirmed speakers on the planned programs.
