SVIPLA MEETING ON IP ISSUES IN OFFSHORING DEALS
Thursday, November 18, 2004
Westin Hotel, Santa Clara (Great America Parkway, east of Tasman Drive)
6:00 p.m., cocktails and registration; 7:00 p.m., dinner and program

SPEAKER: Joel Riff, Partner, GCA Law Partners

Joel Riff, partner, joined GCA in 1998. His practice focuses on technology licensing and online commerce for a wide variety of clients (from start-ups to multinational publicly-held companies) that develop, distribute, and utilize computer and Internet technologies. He advises clients on issues relating to compliance with anti-spam laws, privacy, copyright, trade secret, trademark, and patent protection, as well as on intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisitions and open source licensing. Prior to joining GCA, Joel was a partner at Fenwick & West LLP in Palo Alto, where he headed Fenwick\'s Licensing and Online Commerce group. He organized Fenwick\'s first Internet Law Symposium and co-authored its annual International Legal Protection for Software survey. Before coming to California, he was an associate at Mayer, Brown & Platt in Chicago.

TOPIC: \"IP Issues in Offshoring Deals\"

Joel’s presentation will analyze how choice-of-the-law’s legal rules result in foreign intellectual property laws governing IP rights created in foreign countries by offshore developers. He will also focus on the chain-of-assignment that must be put in place among multiple companies in order to ensure that intellectual property developed offshore winds up being entirely owned by the U.S. company paying for its development.
