TOPIC: \"Patent Prosecution and Litigation in China\"

John Huang is the Managing Director at East IP. His practice includes high tech, information technology and intellectual property protection. His experience in this area is extensive, having worked for several years at Baker & McKenzie in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei on projects involving intellectual property related matters, high tech investment, dispute resolution and litigation planning and patent and trademark applications. He was responsible for the IP Practice in Baker & McKenzie\'s Beijing office. In 1997, he moved to O\'Melveny & Myers where he was the head of the firm\'s IP Practice in China. While there, he oversaw the Beijing team and the establishment of an IP practice while representing major U.S. clients in copyright issues, patent and trademark infringement prosecution, enforcement and litigation matters. He is experienced in the areas of semiconductors, computers, telecommunications, the Internet and entertainment laws.

Mr. Huang joined East IP in 2000. He is responsible for intellectual property infringement prosecution, licensing and enforcement, high tech investment projects and corporate work, regulatory advice related to intellectual property rights, and patent infringement prosecution and litigation.

Mr. Huang has served as the Chairman of the High Tech Issues Working Group of the US-China Business Council in Beijing and Special Counsel to the China Intellectual Property Training Center under China\'s State Council. He has both a J.D. and a Ph.D. in Engineering from Stanford University.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR TWO SVIPLA PROGRAM CHAIR POSITIONS FOR 2004-2005

Due to attrition, the SVIPLA Board of Directors has two open positions. To fill these two Board positions, we are seeking nominations for two Officers from the SVIPLA membership. The two Officers will share the responsibilities of the Program Chair position (see \"job description\" below). Please submit via email your nomination to svipla@yahoo.com (include in your nomination email a brief paragraph about the nominee and why they are interested in the position). Members are most welcome to nominate themselves.

Nominations are requested to be submitted no later than May 15th. The announcement of the 2004-2005 Board will be made at the upcoming June meeting.

Job Description - Program Chairs: Plan the program topics for the upcoming meeting year (September through May - the June meeting each year is devoted to the Inventor of the Year Award); solicit and obtain speakers for the meetings; work with the SVIPLA administrator to coordinate requests by the confirmed speakers on the planned programs.

WIPO Comes to Silicon Valley - High Tech Issues in a Global Marketplace

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Stanford Program in Law, Science & Technology are joining forces to bring to the fore issues relating to intellectual property and its growing importance in today\'s technology and knowledge driven economies.

The conference entitled \"WIPO Comes to Silicon Valley - High Tech IP Issues in a Global Marketplace\" will take place on May 17 and 18, 2004 on the Stanford University campus. The program will address timely issues relating to intellectual property including the international patent and trademark systems administered by WIPO, WIPO\'s alternative dispute resolution services, and WIPO\'s work relating to patent law harmonization. Domain names, software and biotechnology patents, protection of genetic resources, digital copyright and the link between public health and intellectual property are among the session topics.
